11 Aug Digital Marketing Success Requires Remembering Goals
You’re a busy person. You have a lot to get done during the work day, not all of which gets done as quickly or effectively as you may like. This is the case for most people, and they – or, we – focus primarily on speed over quality, though we may not be aware of that. If you’d like to re-focus your work habits to improve the shape of what you produce, then you have to keep in mind the “why” behind your digital marketing tactics.
How Did Your Strategy Begin?
If asked, could you name a single goal for your marketing strategy? Maybe, maybe not. You likely began with one in mind and have lost sight of it, even just a little, since you began. This is the case for a lot of digital marketers who have gotten wrapped up in the enormity of their work and don’t keep in the forefront of their mind the underlying purpose of it all. It’s important, though, to keep those specific goals in mind throughout the process in order to reach them; obviously, it would be harder to achieve your goals if you can’t remember what they are!
“While everyone knows what they do, and many know how they do it, very few know why they do it.” Again, you may have known that once, but have since lost track of your purpose. Keeping that as a central drive is crucial to digital marketing, however, and without it, you’re likely not rising to the standard of effective work that you could reach otherwise. So, try and recall that “clear vision” so that you again have a strong sense of where you’re going and the direction to take to get there.
Take Time to Focus Your Digital Marketing Efforts
It’s important to keep your goals in mind when acting on your digital marketing strategy because it “lets you know what data to analyze, which topics to research, which competitors to assess, which trends to capitalize on, etc.” But, how do you go about recalling what that original purpose was? It’s not as complicated as you might think. That goal is really just “your number one overall goal.” However, that shouldn’t be a vague and unspecific concept. You don’t ‘want to generate more business,’ you ‘want to see X% growth in Y months.” If you plan for these more specific goals, then it will be easier to reach them.
Similarly, you want to determine who exactly you’re targeting, and how to reach that group of people. If you’re interested in getting the teenagers following your Instagram account to enter your social media contest, then you can study trends that other companies have used that have been successful toward this goal and with this group. Then, you’ll want to be able to measure the progress toward this end, which is where analytics tools (like Google Analytics and many others) come in handy. “Measuring your digital marketing strategy every step of the way enables you to make the right adjustments and capitalize on opportunities to increase the likelihood of your goal being actualized.”
It may take more time than you’d like to go through this process, and time that you don’t think you have, but it’s worth it.
