09 Jun Instagram Rises as Social Media Player
Instagram is unquestionably a platform that has exploded onto the scene. “100 million signed up in the last four months” alone, and if you aren’t taking advantage of this trend by marketing out on this site big time, then you’re likely missing out.
How Much (and When) Should You Post?
Did you know that Instagram is currently the third most popular social media platform (based on monthly visitors) behind Youtube and Facebook? You may not have the content for Youtube and you’re probably on Facebook already, which means that this should be your net big goal for social media development. The way, then, that people are successful on Instagram is through routine, with regular posting, follower engagement, and more.
To begin, make sure that you’re having a “conversation” with anyone and everyone who comments on your photos or videos. Even if you allot just a few minutes each day to this task, it will produce more results, of course, than if you did nothing at all. After that, leave some comments on your own to better engage other brands and users who may then become followers of yours. Make sure that you “say something that stands out and shows you put some thought into it” rather than leaving a brief and/or generic comment. People will know if you’re just copying and pasting the same, mindless sentence or blurb!
Part of gaining a followership on Instagram, or on any social media site, is frequent posting. On this site (or app), it should really be about once a day. “However, profiles with larger followings usually post more often than that.” You should start with a number that is manageable, though, so as to avoid overwhelming your followers with content. Also, it’s more important that you make a routine you can stick with, so don’t commit to five posts a day if you know you won’t have time for it. A “steady flow of content” is crucial as it continuously engages your followers and reminds them of your existence.
#TradeSecrets of Instagram Posts
We’ve mentioned this before, but there is, in fact, an “optimal” time for posting content, depending on the platform. For Instagram, the data shows that the best time to add photos or videos is “midnight, 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. were the most popular times to post, with Thursday, Friday and Wednesday being the most popular days.” Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to manually send out content at those times: rather, you can use scheduling applications like Hootsuite to ensure that content is sent out whenever you want it to be posted. Maybe it would be easier on you to schedule everything ahead of time, once every week?
It may not seem like it, but hashtags are very important. They gained popularity and traction on Twitter and have since moved to other platforms, and Instagram is no exception. Make sure that you have one or two consistent ones to use that represent your company or brand. After that, you should work to employ others that can help make your posts stand out: tags like #socialmediamarketing and #instagramstrategy, which I would attribute to this post. The data shows that upwards of 11 hashtags bring the most attention, so consider that as you allot time to this project.
