Local SEO Strategies to Boost Business

“Google found in 2014 that 50 percent of consumers who searched locally on their phones visited a store within a day.” A lot of this is a result of people filling out their Google My Business listings, but that isn’t all that goes into the development of a strong local SEO strategy. How has your business been lately, and what it the status of your online marketing efforts?

Google Isn’t the Only Resource

Not every SEO tactic works for every business, but there are a few constants that should be kept in mind. For example, as mentioned above, keeping the Google My Business profile both updated and accurate is absolutely crucial. Beyond that, though, what are some other things that you can do in order to approach this goal?

  • “Beyond Google”
    The search engine giant isn’t the only place that you should fill out a business profile in order to make yourself seen. Places like Yelp, Bing Places for Business (yes, even Bing), and Apple Maps are just a few other online spots that should have your number, so to speak… and literally. Expanding your social media presence beyond just your target area can work, too: for example, one business owner started “holding events in neighboring cities and mentioning them on his site.” It doesn’t have to be out of state, but if you go to just the surrounding cities and establish a presence at local fairs, etc., then you’ll see a difference before long.
  • “Get Personal With Social Media”
    You may not want to spend more money, but it’s often a requirement to spend it to make more of it. This is where paid and “locally-targeted” ads come into play. They don’t have to break the bank with their budget, but they’ll get you much more reach and response than you would have gotten otherwise. Research shows that this kind of advertising can produce leads for months after the original effort. Also, on another note, including images within your visual-based social posts of employees or members of the team seems to generate a very positive reaction. Consider showing your face in some of your Instagram posts, for example!

Create and Correct Your Local SEO Listings

Returning to the original point, though, it cannot be overstated how important it is to make sure you are well-represented within the Google My Business listing. This is a key piece of every company’s local SEO efforts and will ensure that people in and around your area find your business. Since this is free to complete, there really isn’t any reason that you shouldn’t take the time to fill it out.

“It includes your location, contact information, hours of operation, photos, and a brief description”… so, essentially, it sums up all the most important info that anyone could want to know when searching for you. The photos are an enormous piece of this, so don’t neglect taking and uploading many high-quality photos. If you’re restaurant, get snapshots of your food! If you’re a boutique, include some pics of clothes and accessories! The storefront and interior aren’t all that people want to see, so the more pictures, the better.

Finally, remember that even if your listing is correct where you’ve added it, it may not be right across the web. Do some searches to find out if any other sites are including erroneous information about your business that might throw off customers. Visit either Yext.com or YP.com to check out the status of your listings, and then correct any misinformation with Moz Local, for example. You obviously want people to stop by in person, so you have to make absolutely sure that they can find you easily both on and offline!
