06 Oct Common SEO Mistakes to Try and Avoid
Everyone makes mistakes. Even professionals, trying to optimize their posts and pages, who believe that they are doing the right thing for their website. However, even people with tons of experience can make these common SEO mistakes, so take the time to review and see if you’re guilty of any of the following!
Don’t Make These Common SEO Mistakes!
It may seem like a no-brainer, but there are actually some out there who forget that you want to have the shortest load times possible! The faster your site, the better, and the happier your visitors will be. To this end, do a quick check-up on your site’s speed and see how Google ranks it… you may be surprised at the result. Not happy with the speed after that? Resize your images! This is a small task that can make a huge difference. If you have gorgeous sliders and stunning photography, you can still show it off without having all the photos be 5000 pixels by 3000 pixels!
Also, take “a good look at the plugins that are activated. Are you actually using all of them?” If not, then you should prune your plugins list in order to make things run a little more smoothly. To put it simply: “less is more.”
Another of the many common SEO mistakes is trying to rank for the most generic keywords that you can come up with. This will prevent you from gaining any ground on that front, since it’s a little too far-reaching to try and snag a great ranking for something very, very non-specific. It may seem distasteful at first, but try and be as specific as possible to gain some ground there, and then you can maybe attempt one or two of these much more lofty goals.
Changes Behind the Scenes and Beyond
Have you filled out and optimized all of your meta deta, including titles, descriptions, alt tags, and more? If not, then you may be discouraging people to click through to your website since they don’t have much information at first glance as to whether or not your site is what they’re looking for. “If you optimize your meta descriptions with clear and attractive extracts on what potential visitors can find on your site, it becomes easier for them to see if the information they’re looking for is on that page.” This allows you to avoid a negative bounce rate, too, since more people than ever will know (in theory) what they’re getting into when they click.
Common SEO mistakes aren’t just about the ‘behind the scenes’ content alone, though. If you aren’t writing the best and most interesting content possible… if you aren’t producing content that is relevant to your audience… then you are doing yourself (and them) a disservice. You want to have around 200-300 words on every page for the best SEO, but it should also be engaging, if you can manage it. This will be more difficult on some of your more straightforward pages (like your Contact page), but there are ways to make it work. Just make sure you’re writing for your audience above all else!
Finally, one of the most dangerous, but common SEO mistakes is to leave out a call to action. What is it that you want your visitors to do while on your site? With this in mind, try and incorporate that invitation into a button, a banner, or some other attention-grabbing space so that they will be helpfully guided toward your goal for them.
