Social Media Trends of 2018

Part of what makes work in this industry so exciting – and often challenging – is that it changes so frequently. Styles of web design, methods of working on SEO, and social media trends all ebb and flow, adjusting for new ideas and concepts. If you’re interested in what is likely to become big with respect to social media in 2018, then read on to get a leg up on your competition!

Embracing the New Year’s Strategies

We’re officially in the future. Augmented reality, or AR, is creeping into our smartphones and their apps. “Augmented reality is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are ‘augmented’ by computer-generated or extracted real-world sensory input such as sound, video, graphics, haptics or GPS data.” If you’ve ever seen someone playing the infamous Pokemon Go, then you’ve seen augmented reality. So, what does this have to do with social media for businesses? If users have augmented reality filters on platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, then you can use that technology to display your products within their homes, for example. The possibilities will only evolve.

What else is rising within social media trends? Stories. No, not Snapchat Stories, but Instagram’s. “Over 200 million people use Instagram Stories each month, which is over 50 million more than those who use Snapchat — and Instagram Stories is just one year old.” This is an unprecedented boom in popularity, and it’s time for you to get involved. If you post to Instagram, then start crafting stories with more ‘live’ and ‘current’ photos of what you’re up to throughout the day. That doesn’t mean to just post with abandon, but it does mean that you should at least start thinking about this and incorporating the stories into your strategy.

What Are Some Upcoming Social Media Trends?

Do you know the age range of Generation Z? No, this isn’t another name for millennials. This is the generation just after them, whose oldest members are 22 years old. Basically, these are the current ‘young people’ and should be the targets of your efforts online. “A recent study conducted by Goldman Sachs concluded that Generation Z was more valuable to most organizations than millennials.” They are a big part of the reason for the Instagram Stories boom mentioned above, and they will continue to shape social media trends into 2018 and beyond.

If you have any way that you can use it, live streaming is another hugely popular tactic these days that is used by individuals and brands alike. No matter your platform of choice, live streaming allows you to “capture the attention of followers” by showing off your day to day excitement. You may not work in a particularly exciting place, in reality, but that doesn’t mean you can’t drum up some interest. Show off the activities of a company outing! Stream the use of a new product! Take a live tour of your store or offices! There are a lot of things that you can do over a live stream if you have the mind to put together a creative plan.

Finally, Twitter is falling behind. If your brand is heavy on Twitter use, then you may need to rethink your social strategy. If you barely use it, then it’s about time to let it go in favor of stronger efforts. Currently, this platform is lagging behind its fellows, and it’s likely that this will continue over time, based on current statistics. Essentially, you should expect changes to this platform into 2018, so keep an eye on it and adjust your own tactics as needed.

Social media trends come and go, so stay on top of their changes and adjustments to produce the most solid strategy possible for your business.
