Email Marketing: Growing Your Lists of Subscribers

Too many businesses these days overlook the enormous value of email marketing. “Research shows that 99% of consumers check their emails every single day,” which means that almost everyone could have the opportunity to see your chosen information without much difficulty at all. If these efforts haven’t resulted in a lot of subscribers yet, though, then read on to pick up some tips to increase that number.

To Begin With, Try for a Subtle Approach

Most sensible business owners are concerned with money, and so, if you’re part of this number, you should know that email marketing is actually very cost-effective and known for having a high ROI. This is most true when you have a lot of people receiving your emails, naturally, but this doesn’t happen overnight. Most businesses take a while to build up their lists and have to try a few different strategies before landing on one that works for their situation.

One tactic to try is one that you may already have on your website: a “subscribe” bar in the footer or sidebar. Asking for your audiences’ email addresses without the use of an in-your-face popup is a great way to collect more subscribers. Though it’s more discrete in these areas, you still want to make sure that it stands out from the content surrounding it so that people notice it in the first place, so design it accordingly.

Another more subtle way to promote your emails is to create a dedicated landing page. The focus of this page can be about why they should sign up for your emails, along with a place to actually perform that action. This allows for a space entirely devoted to the task of building up your lists and also generates a URL that you can easily share on social media and/or in advertisements.

Working Some Incentives into Your Email Marketing

Yes, you can successfully utilize popups without driving your visitors crazy. The key is to avoid forcing this information on them as soon as they arrive, or – worse – on every page that they visit. Rather, you can set the popup’s trigger to be “on exit,” which means that it will be displayed only when they click to navigate to an external site (or close their browser window entirely).

Do you have any elements of e-commerce? If so, this is a great place to collect the email addresses of your customers. While they’re adding their name, payment information, etc., you can collect their email address. Note that it’s crucial here to include something like a checkbox that asks whether or not they’re interested in subscribing to your newsletter (coupons, emails, or whatever you want to call it). The opt-in is a necessary step in this process and ensures that you get more subscribers than you lose.

Finally, consider providing some sort of incentive for those who cough up their email address. People like getting good information in their emails, sure, but they’ll  like getting discounts, coupons, or something free even more. Most people will provide their email address if you can give them something in return, so think long and hard about what you would be willing to offer to build up your list of subscribers.
