SEO Trends That You Should Be Wary Of

It can be difficult, if you’re browsing online, to separate truth from fiction. To discern between helpful tips and misleading myths. The same is true of SEO trends, if you’re looking for a strategy to boost your rank on Google, so be wary of “breaking” tactics that make claims bigger than what they can actually deliver.

Don’t Overdo It with Keywords

You likely don’t have a lot of time and energy to spare, which is why taking a chance on dozens of potential SEO trends isn’t a good idea. Yes, they’re essential in a general sense to your content strategy and more, but that doesn’t mean each tip or trick is created equal, particularly if they’re advertised as new and cutting-edge. More than just wasting resources, you might be hurting your efforts so far by utilizing keyword strategies that Google doesn’t approve of, so be careful what you opt to try!

As an example, consider keyword density. Jam-packing your page content with an over-saturation of your chosen keyword(s) used to be a pretty popular method, but this is no longer a big ranking factor. Aside from just sounding unnatural to include the same word or phrase dozens of times, doing this in excess can lose you ‘points’ with Google. If you can find a happy medium, then that’s the ideal, wherein you include your keyword enough, but not too much. This is where most SEO plugins can help.

Another myth that often gets confused with current SEO trends is that you must use the “exact match” of your keyword in order to do well in your rankings. Again, though, this can result in some awkward text, and it isn’t as important as you may think. Really, “you should use exact match keywords only when it makes sense and sounds natural.” Otherwise, it’s perfectly fine to write a variation, even if that is as simple as making the word singular instead of plural so that it sounds more natural.

Avoid These Misleading SEO Trends

Most SEO trends don’t involve pop-ups. They’re generally thought of as universally-hated additions to any website. Actually, though, they aren’t as awful as you might imagine, regardless of your feelings on them. Though they can be irritating on mobile, especially, there are a myriad of ways to ensure that they are only visible on desktop. Your audience may still dislike them, but they don’t actually have an impact on your SEO score, despite rumors that circulated with a Google algorithm update in 2016. However, if you opt to have a pop-up, then “don’t go out of your way to interrupt the user experience, and try to make pop-ups as seamless as possible.”

Something that you should keep track of, though, is how many affiliate links you include in your pages and posts. It can get you could financial returns as people click on and use your links, true, but it might also have a negative impact on your SEO. Previously, people believed that it didn’t have much of an effect at all, but having too many can actually “kill your traffic.” Since you obviously want to avoid repercussions like this, which can mean a loss of “50-90%” of your traffic, you should exercise caution when adding affiliate links.

There’s obviously a lot to search engine optimization, and with all of Google’s updates, it can be hard to know what is good or bad for your ranking.
