The New Year is almost always a signal of new resolutions. The first month is often filled with people making promises to themselves or others with a focus on self-improvement. If you haven’t already committed to one change or another, consider one that will boost your business: refresh your website.
Want More Traffic? Refresh Your Website!
Giving your site a face lift might be the change it needs to bring in more clicks, readers, sales, or whatever it is that you’re after. If you’ve gotten someone to look and report back on how fresh your website seems and they found it lacking, then it’s likely time to adjust the design and/or organization to give it a more impressive and modern vibe.
Is Your Website “Modern”?
To be clear, “modern” doesn’t necessarily mean a particular style of fonts or colors. To have a modern site means that it adheres more to current web trends so that people are more likely to find it easy to read and, yes, visually appealing. It also means that you want to have an updated site. Have you changed your content since you first wrote it? Are the numbers, dates, costs, names, and other pieces of information all accurate? If not, make a point of proofing the copy for correctness both in possible misinformation and old typos. Make a point of clicking all of your external and internal links to see that they still work and take you to their proper destinations. Finally, get a second opinion after changing the copy to confirm that it’s been adjusted as needed (it’s easy to miss things if you only have one set of eyes doing edits).
Image Is Everything
Another aspect of websites that can date them and put off your audience is images. If your site features a dozen blurry, older, dark photos, then people will likely leave with an impression of your being unprofessional. Invest in a good photographer or purchase some stock pictures to brighten up your pages and to dazzle visitors. Speaking of your visitors: who is it that you want to be perusing your site? If that answer has changed even a little bit since the site launched, make sure that everything you have online is tailored to that audience. It’s important to not have your content be too general, which has little appeal, and should rather attend to the needs of whatever demographic to which you’re “selling.”
Re-brand and Reorganize
If you’re starting to feel nervous about the amount of changes necessary to refresh your website, don’t worry. Re-branding and reorganizing your website is going to happen at one time or another, and if it doesn’t, then you’re doing something wrong. They say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” but you can and should tweak things to make them up to date in accuracy and aesthetically pleasing. This may mean establishing a more defined brand if you don’t have one already “by aligning all the elements that identify and set your website apart: domain name, website name, and logo.” Cohesiveness is your friend and will only help to boost your site traffic as you continue to update its content and design.
